Fran Carter, New Zealand

This series is a nod to the age of social media culture we are in.

With a strong interest in repurposing unconventional or seemingly redundant materials, I’ve created these works using a technique I have developed by collecting single-use plastic sample Gelato spoons from a local business, sterilizing them and processing them by hand to then create a sheet material. The result is a beautiful translucent almost glass or resin-like effect. Whilst the ever-present concerns of overconsumption and waste, especially resulting from single-use plastics are an underlying talking point, for this series I’ve been inspired to play on the observations of liminal moments and spaces experienced in everyday life in the city, which I have drawn upon for creative inspiration.
